about

Oscar Hammerstein II (1895-1960) and Richard
Rodgers (1902-1979), both born to German Jewish families
in America, were the ultimate team of lyricistdramatist
and stage-composer. Their innovative,
influential and successful musical theatre
masterpieces were a driving force behind
Broadway musicals’ golden age in the 1940s
and 1950s. Their best-known works include
Oklahoma, The King and I, and The Sound of
Music.
While Climb Every Mountain, from the 1959
musical The Sound of Music, is sung by Mother
Abbess to Maria, its message and spirituality
are ecumenical. The lyrics portray climbing
mountains and fording streams as a metaphors
for overcoming obstacles during one’s spiritual
quest, and encourage taking every step toward
attaining one’s dreams.

lyrics

Climb every mountain
Search high and low
Follow every byway
Every path you know
Climb every mountain
Ford every stream
Follow every rainbow
‘Till you find your dream
A dream that will need
All the love you can give
Every day of your life
For as long as you live
Climb every mountain
Ford every stream
Follow every rainbow
‘Till you find your dream

[The Sound of Music (1959), words by
Oscar Hammerstein II]
