about

Moritz (Morris) Goldstein (1840-1906) was born in
Kecskemét in the Austro-Hungarian empire. As
a child, he sang in Salomon Sulzer’s choir in
Vienna. He immigrated to the U.S. in the 1880s,
and first lived in New York before taking a post
in Cincinnati as cantor at the Rockdale Temple
Bene Israel. He was known for encouraging
all congregants to participate in singing, and
especially children. Goldstein was the maternal
great-grandfather of conductor James Levine.
Uv’chen Yitkadash is the concluding part of
Kedushah in Musaf of Rosh Hashanah. It is
followed by a poetical verse that tells the story
of the three patriarchs. Eitan, the Hebrew word
for strong, stable, or steady (and also a common
first name) refers to Abraham. Isaac is the son
willing to be sacrificed on the altar, and Jacob is
a complete and flawless figure.
Goldstein created a large-scale, complicated
composition, broken into sections, each with
a different musical interpretation. The piece
begins with a majestic freestyle recitative
on “Uv’chen” (meaning “and thus”), followed
by rapid tempo changes and a mix of short
cantorial recitatives, bass solo, and choral
sections.

lyrics

And now may Your Name be sanctified Adonoy,
our God, upon Yisrael, Your people,
upon Yerushalayim, Your city, over Zion, the
resting place of Your glory,
upon the kingship of the House of David, Your
anointed,
and upon Your Dwelling, and Your Sanctuary.
May He - our Master - remember on our behalf—
the love of the mighty [Abraham];
and for the sake of the son [Isaac] who was
bound, may He nullify our adversary;
and in the merit of the wholesome one [Jacob],
may the Awesome One bring forth
our judgment to a righteousness -
for this day is holy to our Master.

[Rosh Hashanah Amidah]
