about

Louis Lewandowski (1821-1894) is the German founding
father of modern synagogue music, following
in the footsteps of famed Austrian cantor
and composer Salomon Sulzer of Vienna.
Lewandowski’s pieces are well-known and
are regularly performed around the world in
synagogues of all affiliations.
Born in Wreschen, Poland in 1821, Lewandowski
moved to Berlin at a young age to sing in a choir.
He was introduced to Alexander Mendelssohn,
uncle of composer Felix Mendelssohn, who
became his patron. In 1844, Lewandowski was
appointed choirmaster by the Old Synagogue in
Berlin, where he worked for twenty-three years.
In 1866, he was appointed choirmaster at the
New Synagogue in Berlin.
Lewandowski’s compositional style introduces
four-part choral works in a romantic style,
influenced by the music of Felix Mendelssohn
and other 19th century German composers.
He wrote lyrical melodies that suited the
enlightened taste of the emancipated Jews
in Berlin. His melodies convey a warmth and
sentimentality that touch many Jewish hearts.
Tzadik Katamar is one of Lewandowski’s most
commonly sung works. It is the culmination of a
greater composition called Tov L’hodot (Psalm
92) performed at Friday night service. This
piece exemplifies Lewandowski’s modernized
compositional style, and is often referred to
as “Shirat Ha-Seder” or “the orderly” style. It’s
characterized by a four-part choral setting. This
format of music offered an alternative to “Shirat
Ha-Regesh’,” or the “emotional style,” which was
prevalent in the traditional Hazzanut. The latter
is unmetered, more flourished, and embellished
in nature (See, for example, R’tze Vi-m’nuhateinu
by Israel Alter.)

lyrics

The righteous flourish like the date palm,
Thrive like a cedar in Lebanon;
Planted in the house of the Adonai,
They flourish in our God’s courtyards.
In old age they remain fruitful,
Still fresh and beautiful
Proclaiming Adonai is upright,
My rock in whom and there is no flaw.

[Psalm 92 Kabbalat Shabbat]

Tzadik ka-tamar yifrah
ke-erez ba-l’vanon yisgeh
Shetulim be-veit Adonai
Be-hatzrot eloheinu yafrihu

Od yenuvun be-seivah
D'shenim ve-ra’ananim yih’yu
L'hagid ki yashar Adonai
Tsuri ve-lo avlata bo.
