about

Emanuel Kirschner (1857-1938) was a cantor and composer,
often referred to as the “Lewandowski of
Munich.” Born in Rokittnitz in the former Austro-
Hungarian empire to a family of bakers, he
studied under Cantor Joseph Singer in Vienna
and later in Berlin. He became second cantor at
the Oranienburgerstrasse Synagogue, working
with Louis Lewandowski. In 1881, Kirschner
moved to Munich, where he began a successful
career as chief cantor. His musical style adheres
to the standard model set by Lewandowski.
Sarnu is the concluding verse of the Yom Kippur
Confession (“Ashamnu, Bagadnu…”). Given the
earnest meaning of the text, and the seriousness
of the moment, the piece is composed in a key
of C-sharp minor, known in classical music to be
the key of funeral marches.

lyrics

Emanuel Kirschner (1857-1938)
We have strayed from Your goodly laws and
commandments, but it has not profited us.
Surely, You are in the right with respect to all
that comes upon us,
for You have acted faithfully, we have been in
the wrong.

[Yom Kippur Vidui confession service]

Sarnu mi-mitzvotekha u-mi-mishpatekha, ha-tovim, ve-lo shavah lanu.
Ve-atah tsadik al kol haba aleinu,
ki emet asita va-anahnu hirshanu.
