Samuel Naumburg (1817-1890) is known as one of the three
influential musicians who revolutionized and
modernized synagogue music during the 19th
century, along with Salomon Sulzer of Vienna and
Louis Lewandowski of Berlin. He was a composer,
singer, musicologist, and choirmaster.
Naumburg was born in Dennelohe, Bavaria,
South Germany to a family of cantors, received
his formal musical education in Munich, and later
integrated into Paris’ intellectual society. The
emancipation of French Jewry called for a new
form of worship, and Naumburg, working closely
with famous composers of the time, set out to
introduce a new synagogue service in France by
reforming liturgical music. Naumburg was also
known as a pioneer in Jewish music research.
One of his important contributions was the
compilation of works by the Italian-Renaissance
Jewish composer Salomon de Rossi.
S’u She’arim (Psalm 24), like many of
Naumburg’s works, imitates the choral marches
found in grand opera, or the French 19th century
style of opera. The piece is enriched with vocal
fanfare and drum rhythms. It begins on a minor
key, and then changes to the major, accelerating
the tempo toward an ecstatic ending.
This psalm suits the festivity and the high
spirit of Sukkut, and also appears at the end of
the Malkhu’yot (Sovereignty) section in Rosh
Hashanah Musaf service, where it portrays God
as a king.
lyrics
Lift up high, O you gates
lifted up the eternal doors,
so that the Sovereign of Glory may enter.
Who is this Sovereign of Glory?
Adonai, mighty and valiant,
Adonai, mighty in battle.
Lift up high O you gates
lifted up the eternal doors,
so that the Sovereign of Glory may enter.
Who is this Sovereign of Glory?
Adonai Tz’va-ot
is the Sovereign of Glory.
Forever.
