Miriam Ha-neviah
Beth Styles, Music & Lyrics
One of seven women in the Bible who
are identified as prophets, Miriam
plays a key role in the redemption
from Egypt, leading the women in
song and dance after the Israelites
crossed the Sea of Reeds. Similar
to the traditional view of Elijah as
the herald of redemption, Miriam is
also associated with deliverance and
freedom. In the mid-1990s, out of a
desire to elevate the voices of women
in Jewish text and tradition, songs
about Miriam were introduced into the
Havdalah ceremony as a counterpart
to singing Eliyahu Ha-navi. Styles’s
lyrics celebrate the song, dance, and
female leadership that Miriam brought
into the lives of the Israelites and look
forward to a day when Miriam will
bring us to redemption.
Beth Styles is an award-winning
