Called “The Singing Rabbi,” Shlomo
Carlebach had a remarkable sense of
peoplehood and a love of every human
being that made him one of the most
popular Jewish musicians of all times. His
revolutionary style of worship and spirituality
created a new form of Hassidic Judaism
that had an enormous influence on liturgical
music. This romantic melody in 6/8 meter
is a love song in a minor key, emphasizing
devotion to and love of God and the people
of Israel and yearning for peace. One can
hear a conversation between the different
voices of the community in the responsive
phrases between the strings and the
woodwinds and between the voices.
