Havdolo (Hineh El Y’shuasi)
Zavel Zilberts, Composer
Zavel Zilberts (1881-1949) was
born in Karlin, Belarus and had a
distinguished career as a cantor and
choral conductor in Kiev, Moscow,
and Lodz before emigrating to the
US in 1920. In 1924 he established
the Zilberts Choral Society, which
specialized in cantorial and Jewish
choral music. Zilberts is best
remembered as a composer of
liturgical music, quasi-liturgical and
folk choral settings, and Yiddish
lieder, which were equally popular in
traditional and liberal congregations.
One of Zilberts’s best-known pieces,
his setting for Havdalah opens with
the first verse in a traditional cantorial
style, followed by a festive, joyous,
dance-like setting for the subsequent
lines.

Behold, God is my deliverer, I will trustfull and unafraid. ADONAI is my strength, my might, my deliverance. Joyfully draw water from the wellsprings of deliverance. Deliverance is Yours; may Your blessing rest upon this people forever. ADONAI Tz’va·ot is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold forever. ADONAI Tz’va·ot, happy is the person who trusts in You. Deliver us, ADONAI, our Sovereign, answer us when we call. The Jewish people experienced light, happiness, gladness, joy and honor - so may it be with us. As I lift the cup of deliverance, I call out upon ADONAI.
