about

Hamavdil
Traditional Ashkenazi
Interpretation by Joseph Rumshinsky
Darius Milhaud, Music
Joseph Rumshinsky’s version of
Hamavdil (see Track 2) is a wellknown
quasi-cantorial folk-influenced
composition, written as a secular
Yiddish theatrical and concert number.
After quoting the first verse of the
Hebrew hymn, it continues with
Yiddish texts of the Havdalah service.
Raymond Goldstein’s arrangement
is an intricate combination of
Rumshinsky’s composition played
on top of unusual harmonies by the
French Jewish composer Darius
Milhaud.
Joseph Rumshinsky (1881-1956) was
a prominent composer for the Yiddish
theater. Born in Lithuania, he came to
the US as a young adult.
Darius Milhaud (1892-1974), who
fled Nazi Europe in 1940 and settled
in California, was deeply influenced
by jazz and world music, mainly
Brazilian, and often combined these
styles in his compositions.

May the one who separates the holy and the everyday,
forgive any sins and slights.
A good week, have a good week
A good week, a pleasant week …

God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,
watch over Your people Israel,
protect Your people Israel.
The Holy Sabbath is taking leave;
may the new week arrive with good fortune and blessing,
with all things good and with success.
To You alone we pray,
dear God! And let us say: Amen.

He who made a distinction between the sacred and profane,
between the Sabbath and the rest of the week,
“Hamavdil ben kodesh l’ ol.”
He will multiply our seed and our means
as the sand of the ocean.
We should multiply, and belong only to you,
“Hamavdil ben kodesh l’ ol.”
O, good Creator, O dear Creator,
Sing the “Hamavdil,” sing unto Him.
Praise our Creator. Praise only Him.

God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,
our belief in You is strong.
Watch over us and protect us from any new disasters.
Give us and send us a new, good week.
