about

Hamavdil/Likhvod Hemdat
L’vavi Traditional Ladino
Likhvod Hemdat Libi combines the
first verse of Hamavdil in Hebrew
(see Track 2) with verses in Ladino,
or Judaeo-Spanish, a language based
on 15th-century Spanish that was
the primary language spoken by
Mediterranean Jews from the time of
the Spanish Inquisition until World
War II. This tune, attributed to the
Sephardic community of Jerusalem,
is featured in the musical Bustan
Sepharadi, written in 1970 by Yitzhak
Navon, the fifth president of the State
of Israel, and now the longest-running
show at Habima, the National Theater
of Israel. The play is based on Navon’s
memories of growing up in Ohel
Moshe, the Sephardic neighborhood of
Jerusalem in the 1930s.

lyrics

Ha-mavdil bein kodesh l’hol,
hatoteinu hu yimhol,
Zareinu v’khaspeinu yarbe khahol
V’kha-kokhavim balaila.

Likhvod hemdat l’vavi
Eliyahu ha-navi.

De nuestra derecha Michael
Y de nuestra issiedra Gavriel
Y sobre la cabeça schechinat el Dió
En Cada dia y cada noche.

Likhvod hemdat l’vavi
Eliyahu ha-navi.

May the one who separates the holy and the everyday,
forgive any sins and slights.
May our families and our fortunes be as many as the grains of sand,
or the stars in the sky at night.

In honor of my beloved,
Elijah the prophet.

To the left Michael
And to the right Gabriel
And above the Sh’khinah of God
Every day and every night.

In honor of my beloved,
Elijah the prophet.
