El Eliyahu
Traditional Iraqi
Traditional Indian
El Eliyahu is a piyyut (liturgical poem)
for Havdalah attributed to Rabbi
Avraham Ibn Ezra (1089-1164), one
of the last great poets of the Spanish
“Golden Age” of Hebrew poetry. The
piyyut is sung to a variety of melodies
in different Sephardic and Middle
Eastern communities. Like Hamavdil
and other piyyutim for Havdalah, El
Eliyahu is concerned with the coming
of Elijah the Prophet to announce
the ultimate redemption. While
graphically describing the suffering
of the People of Israel in contrast to
the success of their enemies, the poet
skillfully integrates biblical references
into a prayer for revenge and salvation.

lyrics

El Eliyahu (Elijah)
El Eliyahu (Elijah)
In the right of Eliyahu (Elijah)
The Prophet, please come

He shall lead his chariot
Restless in captivity
His heart has not rest
Nor envisioned sleep

El Eliyahu (Elijah)...

*My illness grows as I see
My own leanness, while my enemies,
beautiful and fat-fleshed,
they graze

El Eliyahu (Elijah)...

*When will You give a sign
Of redemption to those who call out
To You, O to You they raise
Their voices and weep

El Eliyahu (Elijah)...

Angel of redemption
Come before this poor seeker
O Lord,
God of Abraham call him forth

El Eliyahu (Elijah)...
El Eliyahu
El Eliyahu
Bizkhut Eliyahu
Ha-navi have na

Bo yirtom rikhbo
Na ba-sh’vi ki vo
Lo shakhav libo
Gam lo ra·ah shenah

El Eliyahu…

*Rav mahli bir·ot
Kah’shi u’m’sanot
yafot u’vri·ot
Bassar va-tir’ena

El Eliyahu…

*Matai tar·eh ot
Yesha el kor·ot
Lakh u-lekha nos·ot
Kolan vativkeina

El Eliyahu…
Ha-mal·akh ha-go·el
