Cantor Benjie Ellen Schiller (1958–)
Benjie Ellen Schiller is Professor of Cantorial Arts at the HUC-JIR Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music and serves as cantor of Bet Am Shalom Synagogue of White Plains, NY, sharing the pulpit with her husband, Rabbi Lester Bronstein. Cantor Schiller’s compositions include “Life-Song Cycle,” “Halleluhu,” “Lamdeini,” “You are My Song,” “U’kratem D’ror–Proclaim Liberty,” an American-Jewish response to 9/11, and various commissioned works for choirs, synagogues and interfaith liturgical groups. A World Fulfilled, a solo recording of her compositions, was released in 2002. Cantor Schiller received her bachelor’s degree in theory and composition from Boston University School for the Arts and her master’s degree in sacred music from Hebrew Union College. Cantor Schiller has appeared as a soloist with the Zamir Chorale of NY, Zemer Chai of Washington, DC, the Zamir Chorale of Boston, Sine Nomine, and the Rottenberg Chorale. She has served on the faculty of the Institute for Jewish Spirituality and the North American Jewish Choral Festival.
