about

Jerome Kern (1885-1945) was born in New York to a middleclass
Jewish family of German origin. Often
called the father of American musical theater,
Kern wrote hundreds of songs for musical plays
and movies, bringing American popular music
to the stage and giving it artistic importance.
Kern collaborated with other songwriters,
composing music for leading lyricists, including
Ira Gershwin and Oscar Hammerstein II. Kern’s
well-known works include songs like Smoke
Gets in Your Eyes, Once in a Blue Moon, Ol’ Man
River, The Song is You, and Can’t Help Lovin’.
Many became jazz standards, performed and
recorded by a variety of artists.
All the Things You Are was written for the
musical Very Warm for May (1939). Later, it
became a popular jazz standard, as artists like
Charlie Parker in Birds of Paradise incorporated
its unique chord structure into their works. Most
artists have performed the song by singing only
its recognizable chorus (“You are the promised
kiss of springtime…”). The version recorded for
this album is the complete song in a new choral
setting.

lyrics

Time and again I’ve longed for adventure
Something to make my heart beat the faster
What did I long for? I never really knew
Finding your love I’ve found my adventure
Touching your hand, my heart beats the faster
All that I want in all of this world is you
(Chorus)
You are the promised kiss of springtime
That makes the lonely winter seem long
You are the breathless hush of evening
That trembles on the brink of a lovely song
You are the angel glow that lights a star
The dearest things I know are what you are
Someday my happy arms will hold you
And someday I’ll know that moment divine
When all the things you are, are mine

[Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, from
Very Warm for May, 1939]
